Out of My Box...

I have been lurking here for a short time. Wondering if I can even attempt to do this. So I have a few questions. I've located where I can get a pattern, where do I come up with the lovely bright fabrics? I believe some of them are Kaffe?? yes? And would someone suggest something for a beginner?
You all do such beautiful, intriguing work!! You've got me wanting to learn a new quilting skill. Thanks!!

  1. Hi Barbi, You don't say where you live, but Kaffe fabrics are available online at many places, so you can obtain them regardless. I personally think Lollypop Trees would be easiest for a beginner. If you would like some shop names, just email me at micheleabarnes@gmail.com and I will send you some links. Michele

  2. I'm so glad you've decided to take the plunge! I think you'll really enjoy doing whatever pattern you choose? If this is your first project using such rich, saturated color, I recommend getting the starter pack from the Glorious Color web site. (a link is on the right hand side of this blog) The starter pack will give you a nice selection of fabrics. They are able to see the colors and scale of the fabrics and do a nice job of putting the kits together. From there you can add in fabrics that you have in your stash or find in your favorite sources for fabrics to supplement what they send.
If you look through the posts here you'll see we all have various ways of doing things, and you'll get some tips. If you have any questions as you go along just post them?

  4. Barbi,
I got some Kaffe fabric from my LQS and also from ebay. I'm going to fill in with hand dyes, batiks, etc. from my stash.
I'm doing the Roseville Album and it is the largest applique project I've ever attempted.

  5. SEW glad you've decided to jump in, Barbi! Lollipop Trees is probably the easiest of Kim's patterns if you are a beginner, but I used her Flower Pots pattern to teach hand applique and my students LOVED it! Flower Pots has many shapes and techniques that can be learned. It really depends on what you like and feel comfortable stitching!?

Glorious Color is a fabulous resource for Kaffe fabrics, but there are MANY internet options. Browse around and get ready to expand to your horizons!!! : )

  6. I think the heart that I'm doing is easier as there are NOT a lot of pieces and most are large. Only the ruffle is more intricate and you can leave it to stitch last... of course by machine you can do ANY of them easily!
