Two More Blocks for Flower Pots

I liked the Star block in the center of the quilt so much I decided to make it twice, and skip the floral one. Now I'm working on the scrappy pieced borders. Does anyone have any advice about these? I am wondering if I should stick to softer prints like the 2nd and 3rd squares from the bottom on this trial piece. Would it be better to avoid stronger contrasting prints like the 2 in the middle and the one on the bottom? I like all of my fabrics so much, I paid little attention to placement, but perhaps I should. Help!

  1. I like the softer fabrics like the 2nd and 3rd from bottom, rather than the strong. The strong detract too much from the applique.
    Love your blocks! :)

  2. I absolutely love your background fabric, it makes your blocks just sing. I would use a variety of fabrics for the lattice squares, I think the stronger contrast fabric will work as well as the more pastel ones.

  3. I would use a mix of the strong and soft but avoid having two strong squares right next to each other; sprinkle the strongs in here and there. They complement the strong leaves in the blocks and make your eye move all over them for a b eautiful view . I love it!!!!

  4. Hi Leland,

I rather like the stronger colours mixed in with the mediums, perhaps a more even placement of the darker fabrics amongst the mediums & soft ones? I love the star block too! Kim McL

  5. Your blocks are very pretty!
I think a mix of light/dark will work just fine. Move them around until they look right to you..and sew. :)

  6. Just move them around for an even mix. If the dark colors end up next to each other when setting it together, it will be okay, just as long they all don't end up on one end.

  7. I can't believe I failed to check the blog until this morning! I'm delighted to see your next two blocks. I know how much you love stars, and these are excellent. You are getting very good advice on the lattice. I too like the idea of mixing softer and stronger colors. The stronger colors will keep the eye moving across the quilt and will give it some sparkle. Well done, good friend!

  8. I agree, Leland, a mix of soft and strong colors for the pieced sashings should work beautifully. Just that bit of punch and spark from the strong/dark bits adds interest and keeps your eyes moving around the quilt. I absolutely LOVE your bold background choice!!! Kudo's to YOU!!! : )
